Medical ‘Indignities’

By | October 9, 2026
Jay seated in a clinical chair wearing glasses and a red-and-black shirt, with a blood-pressure cuff on his arm.

When I go into a doctor’s office, I tend to confuse the nurses and the doctors by happily accepting any measurement, test, blood draw, or other medical indignity.

“We need to take your blood pressure. I apologize for the cuff getting so tight. It’s this one machine.”

“That’s fine. I kind of enjoy it.”

“We messed up your lab test… I need to draw more blood.”

“Yay!”

“I need you to go to the lab at the UVM Medical Center and get them to conduct these two tests.”

“Awesome! I love that place.”

All of these statements are said in a cheerful, genuine tone of voice devoid of sarcasm. That’s what really confuses the medical staff. They are used to patients yelling at them all day long about the most trivial stuff and here I am going “hallelujah!”

As I told a nurse just now, I don’t see any point angsting about minor medical things that occur during doctor visits, things that will be over with soon if I just relax. Yelling and carrying on certainly doesn’t help.
