Roasting Marshmallows Over Lava

"Firehose" eruption of Kilauea, February 2017

I have a stupid sense of humor, especially when I’m bored. But I usually don’t make the national news as a result.

Usually.

Parenthetically, I do know better. I was at Kilauea in February of 2017 and kept a nice safe distance.

  1. I’m trying to decide if you name-dropped me in your original tweet because we share a mutual appreciation of each others’ sense of humor, or if you’re punishing me with a month of twitter notifications from a tweet gone viral.

    I’m assuming the former.

  20. Regarding the last picture: What do the signs beyond the foreground say? “No. Stop. Go back. Really. We mean it. You know the Darwin Awards? This is how you get one.”

    • When we did a volcano walk in February 2017, our guide went to extraordinary lengths to stress the danger of cliff collapse along the route we were taking — the lava was fountaining out of a cliff into the sea, but the ocean was undercutting the cliffs and they’d had big chunks collapsing into the ocean. In addition to those signs, there were well marked “DO NOT GO OVER THIS LINE” marker ropes everywhere.

Yet, when we got to the actual “ooh, there it is” spot, you couldn’t see it *well* unless you crossed the ropes. Which half of the tour group did, merrily trotting to the edge of the cliff with their cameras.

Our guide just about had a coronary. Partly because they could lose their right to do tours in the national park if word got around that they weren’t enforcing the safety rules, and partly because “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, YOU IDIOTS?”
